Footnote:- These were the Atlantic undersea telegraph cables. The project began in 1854, with first communication in 1858. The second cable was laid in 1865 with much-improved material and was laid from the ship SS Great Eastern. More than halfway across, the cable broke and, after many rescue attempts, was abandoned. In 1866, a third cable was laid.
