From the family Engineer Rear Admiral David John Carruthers O.B.E. (Mil). Carruthers undertook three terms of service on the China station going from Hong Kong and Canton, now Guangzhou to Wei Hai Wei in Northern China. He was one of the naval brigade that went to the relief of the international settlement in Peking (now Beijing) in 1902. It was during this service that he was presented with the pair of tazzas.

One of the mother of pearl shells has a section missing to the rim and also some underside cracks. The second shell also has a few small chips and underside cracks. The silver on both is in good condition, just requiring a clean. Both are marked and just general surface wear.
