Lot 194

NANCY BALDWIN (1935-2021); an enormous acrylic on canvas, 'Proust at Scheherazade', signed and dated 1985, further signed, dated and titled verso, 127 x 218cm, framed.

‘Nancy Baldwin’s paintings on canvas cover a range of subjects – the landscape and man in it, the nude and domestic interiors. Although sometimes dominated by towering cliffs or a vast open landscape, figures in Nancy’s paintings are always integral to the piece. …The landscapes painted by Nancy over recent years are of places that she has come to know well through frequent visits. Living in landlocked Shropshire Nancy is fascinated with the sea and … the coast of the Llyn provides a constant inspiration. The paintings made following these visits are based on a combination of memory and imagination. A love of literature has also informed her work, as much as the actual geographical area. While Proust and the Brontes inspired earlier works, the beginning of Emily Dickinson’s evocative 1862 poem was a starting point for the Welsh landscapes. ‘I started early – took my dog … And visited the sea’. … The flat coastline of Lincolnshire, at Freiston Shore in The Wash, where the managed realignment of the sea wall has created an expansive area of salt marshes, is the subject of another recent series of paintings.’ – Ann Jones, Hayward Gallery & Philip Hughes, Ruthin Craft Centre.

Estimated at £400 - £600
